DIOR resort Monday may 14th _2007 New yorkFor the past two decades we have followed or at least heard about the success of, South Sudanese model, Alek Wek. She entered into the modeling scene when it was rare (damn near impossible) for a beautiful dark skin black woman to walk down a runway especially for top designers. She definitely broke barriers and even the darling Lupita Nyong’o attested to this in her beautiful speech at the Essence Hollywood Luncheon. Although we are individuals, when it comes to black women making waves in any industry it definitely affects us collectively in some way whether it be positive or negative. Which is why I felt nothing but joy and a bit inspired after reading a recent interview with Alek Wek. She’s such a humble and pure soul that really took her career to extreme heights and in the process has given back and continues to give back to her community. It’s a beautiful thing. Moving along….

o-NICOLETTE-570The word plus-size has been overused to the extreme these days. Then there is using it to describe everyone when again that is not the case, but I digress. Either way, its getting tricky and fabulous fashion blogger Nicolette Mason tells us how and why in her interview with Michelle Persad of The Huffigton Post. She also discussed how she broke into the fashion industry and acknowledged that it was hard work mixed with a bit of being privileged. I appreciated her honesty, straightforwardness and connected more with her as a person. Read the full interview (Huffington Post).

Well those were some highlights for the day. Check back in for more fashion highlights.
