I think it’s safe to say that I have a slight girl crush on Nasty Gal, founder and CEO, Sophia Amoruso. I mean who wouldn’t she’s BEYOND the dopest CEO I’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to know through media ie: Nasty Gal, Social Media, Interviews and now through her latest endeavor, her book, “#GirlBoss”. I am channeling my inner Wendy Williams when I say this, but she’s very much a friend in my head and with good reason.

I had the pleasure of reading her easy flowing and humorous book that is filled with quotes (which I love), tips for life and career (which I love even more) and honest and real experiences about her life (which I loved the most). Her outlook and how she relayed it to us in her book had me hooked from the first page.

So what did I take away from this delightful memoir of real experiences that #Girlbosses have and will go through? A lot, but until Sophia is open to having a one on one with me someday, for now I’ll just highlight some key take aways.

1. What I really loved and appreciated more than anything was the inclusion of the “Portrait of a #Girlboss” segments. These hit home for me because throughout the book it continued to reiterate for me what Sophia was saying. These fellow #Girlbosses were all go-getters who did not have the answers right away about the trajectory of their lives, but they did the ONLY thing #Girlbosses could do – keep grinding, believe in themselves and run the world or at least the world around them. It is always great to see that you are not alone in a world where it is easy to feel that way because you do embrace your individuality whether it’s being quirky, etc.

2. The book was broken out into sections like how to identify #Girlboss characteristics, what to do with them and how to not only sustain them but keep evolving as a Girlboss over time. She made it a point to illustrate the path she took to get to where she is. I do not live my life with regrets because every moment defines the next moment and Sophia touched on that. Although she had some unpleasant moments and lacked direction here and there she was blessed for all of her experiences because they got her to where she is today. That reflection again reiterated things for me. I may not be pleased with certain aspects of my life but #Girlbosses rise to every occasion. We pick and choose our battles, what rules to follow and which ones to break and we get ish done.

3. The entire book to me was a blessing in disguise. I was excited to read it because I am passionate about the brand and it’s founder, but it reaffirmed a lot of things for me. Sometimes reassurance is good to help us remember that we are on the right path or at least the path we are supposed to be on at that moment. Personally, I’ve always been a #Girlboss even if I’ve never identified it in that way, but it was great to read about someone’s journey to embracing that. It helped me to continue to embrace my individuality of being a #Girlboss, basically continuing to own it, and understand that I am not alone. My favorite chapter out of the book (the entire book is AMAZING) is the last chapter. Sophia makes a statement about 1%. We live in a world where billions are trying to stand out and succeed, but billions rarely do except that 1%. That 1% is a special group that welcomes challenges and overcomes obstacles while continuing to be authentic to themselves. Such a realistic outlook that I took to heart. Which category do you want to fall into? I know I am in that 1%, but it’s more than knowing it you have to believe it, own it and do it. Wise words from that section.

QUOTE 3

Overall, I am proud of Sophia Amoruso. I am proud of her because she’s a rockstar in her own right and felt the need to share that with us. By her sharing how amazing she knows she is and why she rocks out only helps to instill, as she mentioned in her book, how to own being a #Girlboss. Successful people pop up everyday, but there are very few who pop up the way she did and through the route she took. If you take away NOTHING else from her book, I think it is important to take away this: you create your own destiny and no one can get in the way of that – so don’t let them.
